STEP THREE

Layout A Room

Once you have your measurements and you have transferred them to graph paper you can move forward with a room. Start with a large room like a Great Room or Living Room. Generally speaking, furniture should be arranged around a center of interest. Fireplaces, windows with good views and large pieces of furniture are natural centers of interest if you have them. You can also create a center with a painting, a lighted shelf of objects or some other feature. Based on how you have decided to use the room in step two, some compromise may be needed to accommodate the flow of traffic through a room. Try the layout a few ways to determine the one you feel will best fit your family.

If you have trouble visualizing the layout on paper you can also make full size templates of your furniture. It’s easy and it’s a good way to get the kids involved. Measure the dimensions of a piece of furniture and tape pieces of newspaper together to match the size of the furniture’s footprint. Just place the newspaper template where you would place the furniture and you will get a feel for how the piece will fit and how traffic will flow around it.
