Give room planning as much time as you can. Professional designers put a lot of thought into their work. In one firm, for example, both partners work out two or three floor plans apiece for each room. Then they discuss their plans with each other, come up with revised plans, and usually discuss several alternatives with the client. There’s no reason you can’t do the same. You can even make it easier — get some graph paper, make scale drawings of each room, and try out alternate plans with scale cutouts of your furniture. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of drawing furniture pieces you can buy a pre-made room planning kit with large sheets of graph paper and furniture cutouts already pre-sized for you.
